Man, early 2019 felt like a real crossroads for me, you know? It was February, and I was just kinda drifting through my day job. Not bad, not great, just… there. Kicking Off the Idea
The idea that stuck was building a super-simple, personal knowledge base. I had notes scattered everywhere – Post-its, text files, random Google Docs. It was a mess. I wanted one place, simple to use, where I could just dump my thoughts and find them later. No fancy features, no over-the-top stuff, just pure utility for myself. I called it “The Brain Dump.”
I started by just sketching out how I wanted it to look and feel. Grabbed a notebook and a pen, just scribbled down boxes and arrows. I pictured a main page where I could quickly add a new thought, tag it, and then search through everything. Sounded easy enough, right? Famous last words, I tell ya.
Rolling Up My Sleeves and Diving In
My first step was picking the tools. I’d messed around with a bunch of different front-end stuff before, but the backend was always a bit of a mystery, something I’d usually let someone else handle. This time, I decided I was gonna tackle it all. I wanted to understand how to store all that information properly. I picked something lightweight that a buddy had mentioned once, something I hadn’t really touched.
I remember opening up my editor and just staring at a blank file. It felt like standing at the base of a huge mountain. Where do you even start? I decided to just break it down. First, I needed a way for me to even see a web page. So I focused on just getting a basic “Hello World” to show up in my browser. That took a surprisingly long time, watching a bunch of YouTube videos and just trying different things that mostly just crashed.
Once I got that basic page, I moved onto the input field. How do I actually type something in and hit a button? I played around with some simple HTML forms. It was all about trial and error. I’d write some lines, save, refresh the browser, see what broke, then go back and fix it. It was slow going.
Then came the tricky part: actually saving the data. This is where I really had to learn new things. I spent weeks just trying to understand how databases worked at a fundamental level. I didn’t want to just copy-paste code; I wanted to get what was actually happening. I set up a small, simple database on my own machine. Connecting to it, sending data, pulling data back out – it felt like a total alien language at first.

- Making it look decent: Last but not least, I threw on some super basic styling. Nothing fancy, just enough so it wasn’t painful to look at. Functional over beautiful, always.
The “Aha!” Moment and What Came Next
After about three solid months of evenings and weekends, I had it. It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t production-ready for anyone else, but it was mine. I could open up “The Brain Dump,” type in a thought, assign a tag like “idea” or “todo,” and then search for it later. It actually worked! That feeling of clicking the “save” button and seeing my words appear in a list below, knowing I built every single piece of that, was just incredible.
What did I learn? A ton. Not just about the technical stuff, but about myself. I realized I thrive when I’m building, when I’m solving a real problem, even if it’s just my own. That period, starting in February 2019, really pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and just try. It gave me the confidence to tackle bigger, more complex problems at work later on. It showed me that “what’s next for you” doesn’t always have to be some grand plan or a new job title. Sometimes, it’s just picking a thing that bugs you and figuring out how to fix it with your own two hands. And that, my friends, often leads to much bigger things down the road.
