Understand major or minor part of a tarot deck NYT.

Posted on 01/01/2026 Phoenix Vale By Phoenix Vale

So, I’m gonna tell you all about my journey figuring out this tarot stuff, especially the whole major and minor arcana business. It wasn’t overnight, I tell ya. For years, I kinda just dismissed it as hocus pocus, pretty pictures, or something people did at carnivals. Never really paid it any mind. But then, a few years back, something just clicked. Maybe I saw an old deck at a flea market, or heard someone talking about it. Anyway, my curiosity got the better of me.

I decided, what the heck, I’m gonna actually dive in and see what’s what. I went online, did a bit of looking around, and ended up buying a classic Rider-Waite deck. When that package arrived, I remember tearing it open, pulling out the box, and just holding the cards. They felt substantial. And man, there were a lot of ’em! Seventy-eight cards. My first thought was, “How in the world am I ever going to remember what any of these mean?”

I started just flipping through them, just looking at the pictures. Some of them were really striking – that big scary Death card, the crazy Wheel of Fortune, that guy hanging upside down. Others, I just kinda glossed over. They looked like… well, like playing cards, almost. Just with different pictures. That’s when I started noticing some had names like “The Fool” or “The Empress” written across them, and others had numbers and suit symbols – cups, swords, wands, pentacles. This was the first hint that there was a system here, not just a random collection.

That’s when it finally hit me. There were these two big categories. People kept talking about the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. For the longest time, it just sounded like fancy words without much meaning. But with the deck in my hands, I started to pick them apart. I laid out all the cards and began separating them. I pulled out all those twenty-two cards with the big names and Roman numerals – from The Fool (0) all the way to The World (XXI). I remember feeling a bit intimidated by them. They felt heavy, like they carried a lot of weight. Each one felt like a whole story in itself, a big life lesson or a major turning point.

I spent a good few sessions just staring at those Major Arcana cards. I’d pick one up, look at the art, try to feel what it was telling me. The Magician, with his tools on the table, felt like pure potential. The Lovers, a choice. The Tower, well, that one just looked like pure chaos and sudden change. I didn’t try to memorize anything right away, just connect with the imagery and the vibe each card gave off. They felt like the big, sweeping chapters of a life story, the major events that shape you.

Then I turned my attention to the remaining fifty-six cards – the Minor Arcana. These were trickier at first. They looked so much like regular playing cards with their four suits.

  • The Cups: Felt like emotions, relationships, how we feel stuff.
  • The Swords: All about thinking, communication, sometimes conflict, the sharp edges of the mind.
  • The Wands: Energy, passion, creativity, getting things started, adventures.
  • The Pentacles: Earthy stuff, money, work, home, our physical world.

And within each suit, you had the Ace through Ten, and then the Court Cards: Page, Knight, Queen, King. This was a lot to take in. It felt like breaking down those big life chapters into all the little daily paragraphs and sentences. The everyday struggles, the small joys, the actions we take, the people we meet. They weren’t as dramatic as the Majors, but they were super relatable, talking about the nitty-gritty of life.

Putting It All Together

Once I had them separated and started to get a feel for each category, it suddenly all clicked into place. The Major Arcana? Those are the big overarching themes, the significant milestones, the spiritual and archetypal lessons we encounter. They are the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of life’s bigger picture. The Minor Arcana, on the other hand, shows us the ‘how’ and ‘when’ – the day-to-day happenings, the practical challenges, the emotional states, and the people who influence our lives. They fill in the details of the Major Arcana’s broad strokes.

I started doing little one-card pulls for myself in the mornings. If a Major Arcana card showed up, I knew it was gonna be a day with a strong, perhaps fated, energy to it, something I needed to pay attention to on a deeper level. If a Minor Arcana card appeared, it was more about what I’d be dealing with practically, emotionally, or socially that day. It put things in perspective. It helped me understand that a full tarot reading isn’t just a jumble of cards; it’s a conversation between the big, defining moments and the small, crucial details of existence.

It’s still a journey, of course. I’m still learning new nuances every time I pick up the deck. But that initial hurdle of understanding the fundamental difference between the major and minor parts was a game-changer. It took the overwhelming feeling out of it and replaced it with a sense of structure and story. And that made all the difference in actually starting to learn how to read them and connect with their messages.
