Are there any negative double virgo traits? Learn how to stop being so critical of yourself and others!

Posted on 19/11/2025 By Luna Hart

Man, I had to write this down. I spent the last three weeks absolutely drowning in my own head, and it all started with a simple website landing page redesign. Simple, right? Except for me, ‘simple’ means three days of obsessively moving a pixel back and forth.

I was working with a developer friend, Chris, on this small side hustle project. When he showed me the first draft, it was good. Honestly, 90% there. But my brain just kicked into high gear. I zeroed in on the font weight in the footer, which, objectively, nobody cares about. I didn’t just point it out; I wrote a three-paragraph email explaining why that specific weight would compromise the entire user experience funnel. Yeah, I’m exhausting, I know.

Chris called me that evening, not angry, just tired. He said, “Look, man, I get you want it perfect, but you just shredded three hours of my work over something cosmetic. It feels like you’re trying to find things wrong, not make things better.”

That call hit me like a truck. I listened to him, really listened, and I recognized the pattern. This wasn’t just my professional diligence; this was my default setting: Hyper-critical. Of everyone, but mostly, viciously, of myself. That’s the classic negative Double Virgo trait, isn’t it? The non-stop internal auditor.

The Recognition Phase: Defining the Damage

I realized I had to stop calling it “attention to detail” and start calling it “self-sabotage.” My first step in this practice log was simple: I opened a fresh document and documented every single instance over the previous month where my criticism led to a worse outcome, not a better one.

I wasn’t surprised by the sheer number of entries, but the severity shocked me. I had held back submitting two potentially great ideas because they weren’t “perfect” in my head. I had alienated three colleagues by correcting their minor grammatical errors in team chats. I was prioritizing the flawless presentation over the actual execution or the human connection.

I labeled the negative traits I was actively trying to reverse:

  • The relentless need to correct others (external projection).
  • The perfection paralysis (internal self-pounding).
  • The inability to accept “good enough” (scope creep and burnout).

The Action Plan: Intervening in the Critique Loop

I needed concrete, dumb-simple rules to short-circuit the critical thought before it became an action. I couldn’t just tell myself, “Be nicer.” That never works. I needed mechanical stopgaps.

I developed the “10/3 Rule.”

The 10-Second Wait (External Criticism)

If I saw something I wanted to correct or criticize about someone else’s work, I forced myself to wait 10 seconds. I would ask myself two questions before I typed a response or opened my mouth:

  1. Will this correction fundamentally change the outcome of the project?
  2. Is this correction something only I, the self-proclaimed expert, care about?

If the answer to either was “No,” I deleted the thought or the draft comment. It was amazing how much less I had to say once I implemented this. I instantly freed up my mental energy from policing other people’s punctuation.

The 3-Item Acceptance (Internal Criticism)

This was about me. When I finished a task, my brain would immediately start listing everything wrong with it. To fight this perfectionist paralysis, I committed to only allowing myself to list a maximum of three flaws before I had to stop and label the project “Finished.”

I literally wrote down the first three flaws. Then, I declared the work 80% complete and moved on. The realization? 80% published is infinitely better than 100% stuck in drafts. I pushed out three blog posts that week that had been sitting dormant for months because I finally accepted they were “flawed but valuable.”

The Logged Results: Where I Landed

The first week was brutal. I bit my tongue so hard I almost bled. My anxiety went up because I felt like I was letting standards slip. But by the middle of the second week, something shifted. I started noticing the positive things in people’s work, because I wasn’t busy searching for the negative ones.

The big win came yesterday. Chris showed me the revised landing page. There were still a few things I would change, minor layout stuff. My old self would have launched a detailed attack plan. Instead, I stopped, counted to ten, and said, “This is fantastic. The flow is clear, and the call to action is strong. Let’s launch it.”

He actually seemed shocked. He said, “That’s it? No notes on the border radius?”

I just laughed and replied, “Nope. It’s good enough. It’s better than good enough, actually.”

The practice isn’t about eliminating the critical eye; that’s a useful tool. It’s about reprogramming the automatic impulse to weaponize it. I learned that being critical of myself and others is less about quality and more about my own need for control. By implementing these simple, almost silly mechanical steps, I wrestled back that control from my inner Virgo tyrant. The work is getting done faster, the relationships aren’t strained, and honestly, I sleep a whole lot better now.
