How I Got Started
Last winter was rough. My bank account kept crying, and my relationship felt like walking on thin ice. Saw this “Career Virgo 2022” thing floating around about finding balance between love and money. Thought – screw it, let’s try something new.
The Ugly Truth
Tracked every penny for two weeks. Coffee here, impulse Amazon purchase there – no wonder cash vanished. Felt like a dumpster fire. For love? Realized I canceled three date nights in a row for “urgent freelance work.” My partner cooked dinner alone those nights. Cold spaghetti in a dark kitchen – that hit hard.
Baby Steps Mess
Tried blocking two hours nightly – zero phone, pure relationship time. First week? Disaster. Kept checking work Slack like a crack addict. Second attempt – moved my router to the bedroom. No signal in living room = forced to talk. We played cards. Didn’t recognize her laugh anymore.

-
Money fixes looked dumber:
- Canceled two streaming services immediately
- Set up separate savings pots physically – used literal jars labeled “Bills” & “Fun”
- Scheduled “money dates” every Sunday to stare at bank statements together
What Actually Worked (Sort Of)
Told my boss “no” to weekend work for once. Thought he’d fire me. He just shrugged – “okay.” Put the extra time into meal prepping. Saved $22.50/week on takeout salads. More important? When my partner got sick Tuesday, I was actually home to make soup. Small win.
Today’s Reality Check
Balance ain’t perfect. Last month I forgot the money date – found my partner paying bills alone at 2am. We fought. But now? We fight about money instead of silence. Progress, I guess. Still broke, still stressed, but we’re sitting at the same damn table this year. That counts.
