So today I wanna share how I finally wrapped my head around the Emperor and Empress tarot cards. Took me ages, honestly. These two kept showing up in my readings, and I was like, “What are you guys even trying to tell me?” Started simple, just like anybody new would.
First, I grabbed my trusty Rider-Waite deck – the one gathering dust since last Christmas. Pulled out JUST the Emperor and Empress cards. Plopped them down side-by-side on my coffee table next to a half-empty cup of lukewarm tea. Stared. Hard. Felt like trying to read hieroglyphs. “Okay,” I mumbled, “Guy on a throne with a ram head. Lady chilling on cushions with a bunch of nature stuff. Got it. Now what?”
The Head-Scratching Phase
Flipped open three different beginner tarot books. Skimmed those pages like my life depended on it. Here’s the messy stuff rattling in my brain:

- Emperor dude: “Authority”? “Structure”? Okay, so… like my boss micromanaging my TPS reports? Or… paying my taxes on time?
- Empress lady: “Motherhood”? “Abundance”? Felt kinda obvious, but also super vague. Is this about my neighbor’s prize-winning tomatoes? My desire for another slice of pizza?
- Together? Total mystery. Yin and yang? Order meets chaos? Dad energy meets mom energy? Still fuzzy.
The books used big words – “archetypes,” “manifestation,” “sovereignty.” My eyes glazed over. Needed something real to hook onto.
Putting Rubber to the Road
Enough theory. Time for action. Did a quick morning one-card pull for a whole week, asking “What energy should I focus on today?”
Day 1: Emperor pops up. Groaned. “Structure? Ugh.” Fine. Made a stupidly detailed to-do list for work. Actually… ticked off everything? Huh. Maybe not so dumb.
Day 3: Empress shows her face. Decided to skip the grocery list. Bought flowers for myself. Cooked a big, messy, comforting pasta bake just because. Felt… weirdly good.
Day 5: Emperor again. That afternoon meeting where everyone talked in circles? Slammed down some clear goals like that guy slams his sceptre down in the picture. Boom. Meeting ended in 15 minutes.
Day 7: Empress once more. Ignored the chores. Sat outside feeling the breeze. Called mom. Didn’t multitask. Just felt kinda… full.
The Lightbulb Moment (Kinda)
Started seeing patterns:
- Emperor: It’s NOT about being a controlling jerk. It’s the energy of setting boundaries, making solid plans, taking charge when things drift. Like building the damn fence so the garden (Empress!) can actually grow without rabbits eating everything.
- Empress: Not just squeezing babies (though she likes that). It’s allowing yourself to receive joy, trusting the process, nurturing your ideas and yourself without feeling guilty. Like letting the garden just BE wild and beautiful sometimes, without needing to trim every leaf.
And TOGETHER? Ohhhhh. That pulled card combo finally made sense. It’s about balance. Last week, got both cards in a reading about a stressful project. Emperor energy said, “Outline the steps! Get deadlines!” Empress energy whispered, “Breathe. Feed your brain good food. Believe it’ll bloom.” Didn’t panic. Followed both. Project didn’t explode. Win.
Still figuring it out, sure. But these two ain’t scary statues anymore. They’re tools. Emperor helps me build the damn table. Empress reminds me to actually sit down at it and enjoy the meal. Simple as that. Go pull ’em yourself. See what they tell you.
