Reversed tarot cards: Simple guide.

Reversed tarot cards: Simple guide.

Alright folks, let’s talk about something that used to really trip me up in my tarot readings: reversed cards. Oh man, I remember when I first started out, seeing a card upside down would make my stomach drop. It was like, “Oh no, what’s gone wrong now?” My initial thought, and I bet a lot of you can relate, was that a reversed card just meant the opposite of the upright meaning, and usually, that meant something bad was coming. It felt like a warning, a big red flag screaming “trouble ahead!”

For a while, I honestly just ignored them. If a card came out reversed, I’d just gently flip it upright before I even looked at it properly. I figured, “Who needs that kind of negativity, right?” I was just trying to get some clear answers, and these upside-down cards just seemed to muddy the waters and make everything confusing. I’d read my little guidebooks, and they’d have a sentence or two about reversals, saying things like “blockage” or “challenge,” but it never really clicked for me how to actually use that information in a helpful way. It just added another layer of panic to my readings.

Then, one day, I was doing a reading for myself about a really tricky situation at work. Every single card that came up was upright, and the reading looked fantastic, all positive and encouraging. But deep down, I knew things weren’t that great. It felt like the cards were lying to me, or maybe I was lying to myself by only seeing the good. That’s when it hit me: by ignoring the reversed cards, I was probably missing crucial parts of the message. I realized I was actively avoiding confronting potential issues, and that wasn’t helping anyone.

Reversed tarot cards: Simple guide.

My Simple Guide to Unlocking Reversed Cards

So, I decided to tackle these tricky little guys head-on. I started experimenting, and what I figured out was that a reversed card isn’t necessarily a bad omen. It’s more like a spotlight pointing to something that needs a bit more attention, a different perspective, or perhaps some internal work. Here’s how I started to approach them:

  • First, I stopped panicking. Seeing a reversed card no longer sends me into a spiral. I just acknowledge it. It’s just a card, doing its job, trying to tell me something.
  • Then, I consider the energy. For me, an upright card represents a flow of energy – direct, active, outward. A reversed card often indicates that this energy is either blocked, introverted, or perhaps even excessive or lacking. It’s not gone, it’s just manifesting differently.
  • I look inward first. This was a game-changer. Most of the time, when a card is reversed, I find it’s pointing to something internal. It could be an internal blockage, a fear, a belief holding me back, or an aspect of myself I’m neglecting. It’s asking me to reflect, rather than react externally.
  • It often signals a delay, a need for re-evaluation, or an opportunity for growth.
    • Is the energy of the card being delayed? Like the Chariot reversed might mean your progress is stalled.
    • Does it ask me to re-evaluate something? The Hermit reversed might suggest I’m isolating myself too much, or not enough.
    • Is there an opportunity to see something from a different angle? The Tower reversed might be a chance to avoid an imminent collapse, or to rebuild on a more stable foundation before everything crumbles.
  • I always check the surrounding cards and the question. Context is king! A reversed card next to a bunch of positive cards might be a gentle nudge, while next to a lot of challenging cards, it might be emphasizing a core issue. And it always depends on what I asked the cards in the first place.
  • I don’t always take it as the “opposite.” For example, the Strength card reversed doesn’t mean “weakness.” It could mean I’m having trouble asserting my inner strength, or that I’m being too forceful and need to pull back a bit. It’s a nuanced message, not a simple flip.

Trust me, once I started approaching reversed cards this way, my readings became so much richer, so much deeper. Instead of just getting surface-level answers, I was getting insights into underlying issues, hidden motivations, and areas that truly needed my attention. It transformed my relationship with tarot, turning those scary upside-down images into powerful allies for self-discovery and growth. So, next time you pull a reversed card, don’t just flip it back. Take a moment, breathe, and ask yourself what it’s really trying to tell you about what’s going on inside.
