Suit in a tarot deck: explore.

Posted on 01/01/2026 Phoenix Vale By Phoenix Vale

So, I picked up a tarot deck a while back. Not because I was into, like, fortune-telling or anything deep like that. Just looked cool, you know? My buddy had one, and I just thought the artwork was something else. So, I grabbed one online. Didn’t even really know what I was doing.

When it finally showed up, I ripped open the package and just started flipping through the cards. They were pretty thick, nice feel. But man, it was a lot. All these different pictures, 78 of them. And then I started to notice these groups. Like, okay, there were these pictures with swords, and then some with cups, then sticks – which I later learned were called Wands, kinda funny – and then these round, coin-looking things, Pentacles.

It was kinda like a regular deck of cards with spades, hearts, clubs, and diamonds, but way more complicated. At first, I just ignored that part. I’d just shuffle ’em, pick a few, and try to make up a story based on the pictures. I’d read the little booklet that came with the deck, but it was all pretty vague. I felt like I was missing something huge.

Getting a Grip on Wands

Then one day, I was just staring at a card, the Ace of Wands, and it hit me. This stick, this fiery-looking thing, it wasn’t just a random prop. I started to notice a pattern. Every card with a Wand in it, especially the early ones, felt like it was about getting something started. Like, an idea popping into your head, or suddenly having a burst of energy to do something. I started thinking about times I had that feeling – that sudden spark, wanting to just go and do a thing. That was Wands, alright. It clicked. It was all about raw energy, getting passionate, jumping into something new. I started to see Wands pop up when I was feeling super motivated about a new project at work, or when I just had a really good idea for something to build or fix around the house.

Figuring Out Cups

After that, I started looking at the Cups cards differently too. Before, I just saw people drinking or offering things. But once I got a handle on Wands, I thought, “Okay, what’s with these cups then?” I noticed they were all about feelings. Heavy stuff sometimes, light stuff others. Joy, sadness, love, heartbreak. It was all wrapped up in those cups. I started seeing Cups come up when I was reflecting on a conversation I had with my old man, or when I was feeling really good after spending time with my girlfriend, or even when I was just feeling a bit down for no clear reason. It was all the gooey, emotional bits of life. When I’d pull a bunch of Cups, I knew it was time to just check in with how I was feeling, not so much what I was doing.

Battling with Swords

Then came the Swords. Man, these felt intense. Swords always looked like trouble. Like arguments, tough decisions, or just plain old pain. It took me a bit longer to get these. I was used to thinking of swords as fighting. But then I started seeing them pop up when I was really wrestling with a big decision, or when I had to have a tough conversation with someone. It wasn’t always about actual fighting; it was about the battle in your head. The thoughts, the logic, the truth – sometimes harsh truth. It was about how you think, how you communicate, how you cut through the noise to get to the point. So, when I saw a lot of Swords, I knew I probably needed to put on my thinking cap, or brace myself for some tough talk or a difficult choice.

Grounding with Pentacles

And finally, the Pentacles. These were probably the easiest to get from the start, I guess. Coins, pentagrams, nature, work. It was all about the real-world stuff. Money, jobs, the house, your body, staying grounded. If Wands were the idea, Pentacles were building the actual thing. If Cups were the feelings, Pentacles were the tangible comfort or security. If Swords were the thoughts, Pentacles were the practical application of those thoughts. I’d see Pentacles pop up when I was thinking about my budget, or planning a home renovation, or just wanting to feel more stable in my life. It was all about what you can see, touch, and hold, and how secure you feel in that world.

After I started seeing these suits not just as decorations but as distinct categories of life experience, man, it totally changed how I looked at the cards. It made everything click into place. Instead of just making up stories, I could see themes. A spread full of Wands told me, “Get moving!” A bunch of Cups said, “Check your heart.” Too many Swords warned me to think clearly or brace for a mental challenge. And Pentacles always pointed to something tangible, something I needed to build or stabilize.

It’s not like I became a tarot master or anything, still just messing around with it. But understanding those suits, breaking them down like that, it made the whole deck way less intimidating. It just gave me a simple framework to understand the daily grind, the ups and downs. It’s pretty cool, actually.
