Okay so I’m a Virgo, right? Always thought being organized and picky was my superpower. But last month my buddy straight up told me: “Dude, you’re exhausting to work with.” That hit hard. Decided to track how my “perfectionism” actually messed things up for a whole week.
The Low-Key Mess I Created
Started noticing little things. Like when my sister asked for cooking advice, I spent 20 minutes ranting about her chopping technique instead of just saying “add more salt.” Felt awful afterward. Another time at work, I rewrote a teammate’s email three times before sending – made us miss a deadline by an hour. Classic Virgo overthinking.
My Messy Fix Attempts
- Tried the “5-Second Rule”: Whenever I felt criticism bubbling up? Counted to five before speaking. Failed miserably the first two days. Accidentally told my barista her latte art looked “unbalanced.” Cringe.
- Embraced “Good Enough”: Left my desk intentionally messy one afternoon. Heart was racing like I’d committed a crime. But guess what? Nobody died. My plants still got watered.
- Asked for Brutal Feedback: Texted three close friends: “Where’s my nitpicking annoying AF?” Got responses like: “You analyze fun like it’s a spreadsheet” and “Stop correcting people’s grammar mid-joke.” Ouch but fair.
What Actually Stuck
Two weeks in, I realized it’s about damage control. When I catch myself obsessing over trivial crap? Now I literally ask: “Will this matter in 24 hours?” If nope? Shut my trap. Also started saying “no” to fixing others’ minor mistakes – saves everyone’s sanity.

Weirdest win? My buddy who called me exhausting last month asked to grab beers. Said I seem “less like a stressed librarian.” Progress, I guess. Still catch myself rearranging groceries by expiration date though. Baby steps.
