Virgo monthly June 2024: See!

Man, sometimes you just gotta jump into something, right? You keep putting it off, year after year, looking at that mess and thinking, “Someday.” For me, that “someday” was my garage. It wasn’t just a place for the car; it was where everything went to die. Old tools, broken furniture, boxes I hadn’t opened since we moved in, three years ago. Walking through it felt like an archaeological dig, trying to find a shovel or a drill. My wife, bless her, was pretty chill about it, but even she’d started making comments, mostly about how she couldn’t even get to the recycling bins without navigating an obstacle course.

So, one evening, after tripping over a rogue garden hose for the third time that week, I just snapped. I said, “That’s it. No more.” I walked into the kitchen, grabbed a pen and a piece of paper, and I started sketching. Not fancy stuff, just crude lines, ideas. Where could shelves go? What could I trash? What absolutely had to stay? I even pulled out a tape measure and started jotting down dimensions – rough at first, then I went back and actually measured everything properly. My wife just watched me, probably thinking I was finally losing it. But I was set.

I started with a massive purge. That was brutal. I filled up three whole garbage bins, then called for a special pickup for the bigger junk. This wasn’t a quick job. This took me a good solid weekend, just hauling stuff out, making decisions. Keep or toss? Donate or sell? I ended up with a small pile for charity and a big ol’ pile for the dump. Seeing that space clear, even just for a few feet, felt like a victory. Like a real accomplishment, you know? It was still dirty as hell, but it was empty dirty, not cluttered dirty. A good start.

Next up, I had to figure out what I actually needed to build. I envisioned an organized space for all my tools. A proper workbench. Storage for all the garden stuff. I spent hours online, just looking at other people’s garage setups. Not fancy workshops, just regular folks making their space work. I picked up some ideas, drew some more sketches. I even made a small budget spreadsheet. Nothing complicated, just “plywood, lumber, screws, paint.” I wanted to do this right, but I also didn’t want to break the bank. My goal was simple: make it functional, make it clean, and make it so I could actually use my tools without a treasure hunt.

I decided to tackle it in phases. First phase was the walls and a basic workbench. I hit up the local hardware store. Man, I love that place. The smell of lumber, the sheer volume of stuff. I bought a few sheets of plywood, some 2x4s, a box of screws, and a few gallons of light grey paint. Painting the walls first was a smart move. Made the whole space feel bigger, cleaner. I got a little bit of paint on everything, of course, but that’s just part of the process, right? Then came the workbench. I built it simple: a sturdy frame with a thick plywood top. Bolted it to the wall so it wouldn’t wobble. That felt good. Finally had a solid surface.

The next few weekends, I chipped away at it. I built shelves along one wall, simple open shelving for storage bins. I bought clear plastic bins so I could actually see what was inside them without rummaging. Total game changer. Then, for the garden tools, I put up a pegboard. Hung up the rakes, the shovels, the trimmers. Everything had its spot. I even made a small stand for the lawnmower, just to keep it from taking up too much floor space. It was slow going, maybe a couple of hours here, a full day there. Life gets in the way, you know? But I kept at it, weekend after weekend, chipping away at my project.

I started this whole thing back in late winter, just after the new year. So, by the time spring rolled around, I was really getting into the groove. Every time I finished a section, I’d step back, wipe my hands on my dusty pants, and just look at it. Each little victory kept me going. I organized all my power tools onto one shelf, got a tool chest for the smaller hand tools. Even had a dedicated spot for my car detailing stuff. It was evolving from a junkyard into a proper working space.

And then came June. I remember the exact moment. It was a Saturday morning, sun streaming through the garage window. I had just finished sweeping the floor one last time. Every tool was in its place. Every bin was labeled. The workbench was clear, ready for a project. I had even hung a small LED light fixture over the workbench, so I could see what I was doing. I put a small radio on a shelf and turned on some classic rock. I brewed a cup of coffee and just stood there, leaning against the doorframe, taking it all in.

I looked around at what I had made. From that cluttered, chaotic mess, to this clean, organized, functional space. It wasn’t perfect, nothing ever is, but it was mine. I could walk in, grab any tool I needed in seconds, and actually work in there. It felt incredible. All those hours of planning, the trips to the hardware store, the sawdust, the paint fumes, the scraped knuckles – it all paid off. It felt like I finally had that “someday” I’d been dreaming about. And seeing it, really seeing it, was just pure satisfaction.
